Hector Heathcote was a well-intentioned cartoon scientist who invented a means of traveling backward in time. He used the technique to relive such historic events as the French Revolution and the building of the Pyramids. He never attempted to change the course of events. He only wanted to understand the reasons behind them and to investigate the consequences. The producers of this animated series hired a history professor to ensure historical accuracy.

In his travels, Hector Heathcote was always accompanied by his trusted dog, Winston, who provided moral support when past events proved to be a little unpredictable.

Hector shared the program with two other cartoon characters: “Hashimoto” and “Sidney, the Elephant”. The former, a Japanese mouse, was a judo expert. The culture, legends and traditions of Japan were amusingly explored through the eyes of Hashimoto and his family.

Sidney was a clumsy, yet well-meaning 42-year-old pachyderm. His loyal and long-suffering friends, Stanley, the lion and Cleo, the giraffe, attempted, not always successfully, to prevent Sidney from creating havoc in the African jungle.

The producer of this series was Terrytoons, one of the industry’s first and most influential animation studios. Paul Terry and Frank Moser formed the company in 1929, with Bill Weiss joining them in 1930.

Eli Bower, a Terrytoons designer, created “Hector Heathcote”, who had first appeared in a theatrical film titled “The Minute And A Half Man”. The character was seen in a number of movie cartoons before appearing on network television. Terrytoons was also responsible for a number of other cartoon characters, including “Heckle and Jeckle”, “Deputy Dawg”, “Tom Terrific” and “Mighty Mouse”. Over the years many major independent producers, directors and animators have passed through Terrytoons’ portals , including Ralph Bakshi and Lars Bourne.

Terrytoons has since been acquired by Viacom International, who has been quite successful in keeping the Terrytoons characters alive through syndication and character licensing. Viacom is a corporate giant who also owns Paramount, CBS, Nickelodeon and MTV, among other assets.
